Water Polo: December 29, 2007

What a crew -- they're still smiling, (at least most of them are!), after nearly 60 minutes of non-stop water polo in the deep end of Norton Pool. Thanks again to "Captain" Bob, (that's him clutching the ball and the edge of the pool), for setting up another annual HUMS Water Polo Event -- a great way to say goodbye to 2007 and hello to 2008.

Click the Video Arrow above for a Live Water-Level view of the action!

Water Polo -- it's not as easy as it looks -- especially if you're trying to defend the goal against Harry. Click the Video Link below to see!

"I need air, I need air, I need air.." said Bill. Or, is it his new book, "How I learned To Stop Playing And Just Hang On The Side!"

He swam thataway!

Bob demonstrates the new semi-legal elbow-hang.

Oh yeah, this is sort of what the game looks like from a fishes view point -- not that there are any fish that we are aware of in Norton Pool.

This is what happens when you use inflatable goals and somebody throws REALLY HARD -- Bob has to do an emergency end-of-game inflation! See you all next year!

Meeting at Meehan's: December 28, 2007

It was a Friday evening of a Holiday/Party Filled week so it wasn't really surprising that the turnout was sparse for our 2nd Annual Pre-Water Polo Gathering at Meehan's Bar in downtown Huntington. Sparse or not, the company was good and the smiles flowed like fine wine. Only time will tell how that "fine wine" feeling will really feel at tomorrow's 6am annual HUMS Water Polo get together.

Mike and Bob together again. Is it true that these two started swimming at the Y in the 1980's? Whew that was a long time ago!

Lynn and James -- is that a Razorback I see on James's shirt?

Chris -- at least the beer was cool at Meehan's!

Bob and Pat -- still smiling after all these years!

Harry and Scott -- it wasn't easy getting these two to stand still for a picture!

Yolanda and Nancy -- thanks for posing, I know it ain't easy!

2008 USMS fitness event “Go the Distance” (GTD)

The objective of this event is for participants to track the distance they swim during the year. When participants achieve the specific distance milestones of 50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 365.25 (average mile a day), 400, 500, 750, 1000, 1250 and 1500 miles – they will be recognized on the USMS website and awards will be available for purchase (for a minimal fee).

There is no cost to enter this event. Participants are requested to email (or use snail mail) to submit the total distance they swim each month. A list of miles per month and cumulative mileage will be tabulated for each swimmer. Once a distance milestone is achieved awards will be available for purchase. They will include swim caps, certificates and patches with the event logo and the distance of the milestone achieved. At the end of the year customized awards will be available. There is also apparel and goodies with the GTD logo on it available to all participants from our online store. The awards order form and information regarding our online store is available on the USMS website. Each month the results will be updated on the USMS website in the Fitness Section. There will be lists to recognize all those that have achieved each distance milestone as well as the current month achievements. Other lists include the mileage for all participants sorted by gender, age group and USMS club / lmsc / zone. In addition there will be graphs illustrating the participation for each zone, lmsc, workout groups, age groups and gender.

The entry form, monthly results, awards order form and a “distance tracking log” is available on the USMS website (fitness section) at: http://www.usms.org/fitness/content/gothedistance

Holiday Party: December 9, 2007

For the second year in a row, the swimmers, triathletes and significant others gathered at the Black Forest Brew Haus in Farmingdale, NY to kick-off the Christmas Season with a glorious Sunday Brunch. Thanks again to Bob for putting it all together. This year, he went a step further and let yours truly, (Mike), just sit and enjoy the Brunch while he went and took most of the pictures below. And judging from the results, he may just have found another occupation -- not that he needs another job or title to go along with "Coach", "Mayor of the Y", "Elder" (that's NOT a dig!), and all around good friend to everyone he meets. Bob, thanks again for a job well done!
